ClimateThe climate where Asian elephants live is typically tropical with temperatures ranging from the low 70's to the mid 80's. A tropical climate is a non-arid climate with temperatures that stay over 64 degrees. Generally, the temperatures do not vary and seasons are only determined by precipitation. ReproductionMale Asian elephants, called bulls, become reproductive in their 20's and will fight another male for a fertile female elephant. There is no seasonality in their reproduction. Female Asian elephants are able to reproduce at about 10-12 years old. The average gestation period is about 18-22 months or 659 days. Newborn elephants called calves are born about 3 feet tall and average about 250 pounds. The calf will nurse from its mother for about 3 years. The birthing interval for female Asian elephants is approximately 4-5 years because the female will not breed again until its calf is weaned. When grow, females will remain with the herd, but the males will leave the herd and travel alone.
